15회 IYF 영어말하기대회 ① 대상
지난 11월 21일 제15회 IYF 영어말하기 대회 결선이 있었다. 서울시 인재개발원에서 열린 이날 대회 결선 진출자들의 발표 내용은 저마다 달랐다. 삶 속에서 잊고 살던 작은 것들의 소중함, 사랑으로 키워주신 홀어머니에 대한 감사, 세상을 향한 당찬 포부까지…. 우리가 그들에게 감동하는 것은 유창한 언변이나 화려한 수사학적 표현 때문이 아니다. 누구에게도 말 못했던 고통스런 일이나, 생각만 해도 얼굴이 뜨뜻해지는 실수 등도 감춤 없이 풀어놓는 진솔함 때문일 것이다.
My name is Soon-Chang Kwon, a student at Handong University double majoring in management and computer science. I am currently a senior having only few months left until I graduate from this college.
Throughout my four years of involvement in the basketball club, I have met many interesting people and have been able to learn a lot from them. My friends from the club used to tell me that “respect” is one single word that best describes sportsmanship. Back then, I couldn’t understand what it meant. Sometimes, it even sounded weird to hear coach saying “Show me some R spirit” out loud in the court. For me, it was just awkward. Isn’t respect the word you use to describe attitude you have toward older people? Isn’t respect the word you say to other people to make them feel pleasant?
But in the course of seeing many basketball players in the past years, I now realize that the word respect can be used for any situation where different people mingle and appreciate each other only based on the values each other has. I realized that respect to different ways of leading a game and just respect to difference itself brings open-mindedness, and that open-mindedness is what is needed for everybody to have to live in this world of the 21st century.
World problems ranging from environment, food, and economy posed at the status quo need exhaustive care by the international society as a whole. No one country can thoroughly solve a single problem. The importance of respecting other countries and their people, and awareness of international cooperation needs more attention. It will eventually shave a path to the common economic development, political harmony, and peace around the world. “Respect” is the keyword in this process. Without this notion of collective efforts, the world surely would lead to a disaster.
Going back to the NBA competition, someone might imagine tense and aggressive atmosphere on the competition day. But surprisingly, as the competition gets heated up, everyone in the stadium suddenly becomes one single unit. There is this point, where each players and audience are from or what languages they speak start to not matter at all. You no more perceive people by their different skin colors or nationalities, but accept them as people who like basketball just as much as you do. They go crazy for the same one thing they all like. They no longer look at each other with any types of stereotypes or bias, but with respect to what is seen.
This is what I hope to see from the future world. All people, regardless of different interests that arise due to their different ethnic or financial backgrounds, need to respect others’ differences and be united. We need to have concerted efforts to solve the common problem we face now as a global citizen rather than taking egoistic approach to rule everything in the world by despising other people who are different from us. Thus, “respect” is the value I uphold and hope I can spread to the world from one point in my life. I want to contribute to fostering this process of building “respect” internationally.
So, what do you need to possess for your own growth and for everybody’s growth? Trust me, it is “respect” to differences.

해마다 미 프로농구NBA에서는 30개 팀이 우승을 놓고 경쟁합니다. 농구팀을 이끌어 본 경험이 있는 농구팬인 저는 딱 한 번 NBA를 관람한 적이 있습니다. 마치 다른 별에서 온 것 같은 선수들의 플레이는 직접 보면서도 믿을 수 없을 만큼 굉장했습니다. 하지만 무엇보다도 저는 NBA 선수들이 갖고 있는 ‘R 정신’을 사랑합니다. 제가 제 삶 전부를 지지할 가치라고 온 마음으로 믿는 이 R은 무엇일까요? 바로 ‘Respect존중’입니다.
저는 현재 한동대학교에서 경영학과 컴퓨터공학을 2중 전공하고 있는 권순창입니다. 앞으로 몇 달 후면 졸업할 4학년 학생입니다.
4년 동안 농구 동아리에서 활동하면서 저는 재미있는 사람들을 많이 만났고, 또 그들로부터 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 농구 동아리 친구들은 ‘존중’이야말로 스포츠 정신을 가장 잘 설명해주는 유일한 단어라고 했습니다. 당시에는 그 말이 무슨 뜻인지 몰랐습니다. 이따금씩 코치가 경기장에서 ‘존중심을 발휘해라’고 외치는 것을 들으면 도저히 이해가 가지 않았습니다. 뭔가 모르게 어색했습니다. ‘존중이란 단어는 나이 많은 사람들한테 가져야 하는 태도 아닌가? 아니면 상대방을 기분 좋게 하기 위해 쓰거나.’
하지만 지난 몇 년간 많은 농구선수들을 지켜보면서 이제는 다양한 사람들이 어우러지며 서로가 가진 가치관을 향해 찬사를 보낼 때면 언제라도 존중이라는 단어를 쓸 수 있다는 사실을 알게 됐습니다. 게임을 풀어가는 다양한 방식을 존중하고, 서로가 다르다는 사실을 존중하면 서로를 향해 마음을 열게 된다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 그리고 그 열린 마음이야말로 21세기 이 세상을 살아갈 모든 이에게 필요한 것임을 배웠습니다.
환경, 식량에서부터 경제에까지 오늘날 전 세계가 겪고 있는 문제를 해결하려면 국제사회가 하나로 뭉쳐 철저히 대응해야 합니다. 어느 특정 국가의 힘만으로는 한 가지 문제도 해결할 수 없습니다. 다른 국가와 민족의 중요성, 그리고 국제사회 협력의 필요성을 인식해야 합니다. 그래야만 경제발전, 정치적인 조화, 세계평화로 가는 통로가 열릴 것입니다. ‘ 존중’이야말로 모든 과정에서 꼭 필요한 단어입니다. 모두가 힘을 합치지 않으면 세계에는 분명 재앙이 닥칠 것입니다.
다시 NBA 이야기를 하겠습니다. NBA 경기 하면 뭔가 긴장되고 공격적인 분위기를 떠올리는 분이 계실지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 놀랍게도 경기가 달아오를수록, 경기장의 모든 이들은 어느 순간부터 하나가 됩니다. 선수들과 관중들이 어디서 왔고 그들이 어떤 언어를 쓰는지가 전혀 중요하지 않은 시점이 옵니다. 사람들의 피부색이나 국적이 전혀 다르게 느껴지지 않고, 농구를 좋아하는 만큼 농구를 좋아하는 다른 사람들과도 그대로 융화됩니다. 모두가 좋아하는 그 한 가지에 열광 하는 것입니다. 어떤 선입견이나 편견도 없이 보이는 그대로 서로를 존중하는 눈으로 바라보게 됩니다.
앞으로 세상에서도 이런 모습을 볼 수 있기를 희망합니다. 서로 민족이나 생활수준이 달라 관심사가 다를지라도 사람은 누구나 서로의 차이를 존중하고 하나로 뭉쳐야 합니다. 자신과 다른 사람들을 경멸하고 세상의 모든 것을 통제하기 위해 이기적인 접근법을 취하기보다, 세계시민으로서 우리가 당면한 공통의 문제를 해결하고자 단합된 노력을 경주해야 합니다. 따라서 존중이 야말로 제가 지지하는 가치이자, 앞으로 제 인생의 어느 순간부터 세상에 전하기를 희망하는 가치입니다. 저는 세계 여러 나라들이 서로를 존중하는 풍토를 조성하는 데 이바지하고 싶습니다.
여러분이 성장하고 또 모든 사람들이 성장하기 위해 필요한 태도는 무엇일까요? 바로 자신과 다른 존재를 향한 ‘존중’입니다.

수상소감
평소 농구를 좋아해서 NBA를 즐겨보는데, NBA에서 가장 강조하는 정신이 바로 상대방에 대한 존중이라는 걸 알게 되었다. 어떤 운동을 하건 상대와 상대의 실력을 존중할 때 멋지고 공정한 경기가 이뤄질 수 있다. 그 존중의 의미에 대해 생각하며 원고를 준비했다.
‘연습은 실전처럼’이란 말처럼, 지금 관객들 앞에 서 있다는 생각으로 이미지 트레이닝을 했다. 내가 최고라는 확신을 갖고 하니 연습이 즐거웠고, 원고의 어느 부분을 강조해야 할지 머릿속에 그려졌다. 세계인들이 서로를 존중하고 서로를 향해 마음을 열어 세계의 모든 문제를 함께 해결해 나갔으면 한다.
