투하오와 별삼 형제

중국에서 굉장히 유명한 투하오土豪와 별삼.三 형제의 이야기입니다. 투하오와 별삼은 ‘졸부와 소심한 사람’이라는 뜻입니다. 중국에서의 졸부 의미는 한국에서 쓰이는 의미와 달리, 하루아침에 벼락부자가 됐지만, 성품이 호탕하고 관대하다는 좋은 의미가 담겨 있습니다. 투하오와 별삼은 의형제로 둘은 서로 정말 아끼고 좋아했습니다. 그런데 어느 날 형이 동생에게 이야기했습니다.

“야, 별삼. 이 형을 위해서 너는 뭘 해줄 수 있냐. 뭘 희생할 수 있느냐?”
그렇게 형이 묻자 동생이 잠시 생각했습니다.
“나는 형을 위해서 내 생명까지도 줄 수 있습니다.”
형이 그 말을 듣고 감동했어요.
“별삼, 그런데 나는 네 생명까지 바라지는 않고 한 가지 요구하고 싶은 게 있어. 지금 네가 사랑하는 그 여자를 나에게 줄 수 있니?”

 방금 별삼은 형 투하오에게 생명까지 줄 수 있다고 말했기에, 정말 크게 마음을 먹었습니다.
“투하오 형. 그녀를 형에게 보내드리겠습니다.”

 동생은 자신이 사랑하는 여인을 형에게 보냈습니다. 시간이 지나고 동생 별삼은 직장을 잃었습니다. 형이 생각났습니다. ‘형은 절대 나의 희생을 잊지 않을 거야. 그래서 내게 일자리 주기를 거절하거나 싫어하지 않을 거야!’
별삼은 형 투하오의 회사로 찾아갔습니다. 그런데 어찌 된 일인지 얼굴 한번 안 비치고 비서를 시켜 내쫓는 것입니다.

“나가세요!”
“아니, 나를 모르시겠나요? 우리 형이 이 회사 사장이라고요. 어떻게 동생이 형을 만나러 왔는데 얼굴도 안 비칠 수 있나요? 형이 정말 지금 회사에 있나요?”
“네. 계십니다. 그렇지만 당신을 안 만나시겠다고 합니다. 당장 나가세요.”

 비서는 쌀쌀맞게 동생을 회사 밖으로 내동댕이쳤어요. 별삼은 너무 황당했어요. ‘어디 두고 보자!’ 속으로 이를 부드득 갈았습니다.
며칠이 지나 별삼은 길을 가던 중 한 노인이 길에 쓰러져 죽어가는 것을 보았습니다. 사람들은 쳐다보지도 않고 지나치는데 별삼은 노인에게 다가가서 숨을 쉬는지 확인해보았습니다. 죽은 사람처럼 꼼짝 않고 있었습니다. 병원으로 노인을 모시고 가서 의사를 만났습니다. 의사는 노인을 살려낸 별삼을 칭찬했습니다. 노인은 부자였는데, 그 자리에서 별삼을 양아들로 삼고 재산의 반을 주었습니다. 별삼도 졸부가 되었습니다. 별삼은 가장 먼저 투하오 형의 옆집으로 별장을 하나 얻어 살았습니다. 그리고 며칠 뒤.

누가 노크를 ‘똑똑’ 해서 나가보니 허리 구부정한 한 할머니가 “적선하세요. 적선 좀 하세요.” 하는 겁니다. “가서 맛있는 것 사 드세요.” 하고 별삼이 돈을 주었습니다.
그런데 돌아서는 할머니의 모습을 보며 돌아가신 어머니가 생각나서 별삼이 다시 불렀습니다.

“저, 여보세요! 혹시 음식은 잘하세요?”
“제가 요리를 잘합니다.”
“그럼 됐어요. 저는 혼자 이 큰 집에서 살고 있는데 음식을 해주시면 좋겠습니다.”
“그렇게 말해주니 정말 고맙소.”

 할머니는 부지런히 청소며 밥을 해주었습니다. 두 사람은 모자지간처럼 아주 가까워졌습니다. 별삼이 ‘이분을 양어머니로 모셔야겠구나.’ 하고 생각했습니다.

“제가 양어머니로 삼고 싶습니다.”
“아이고, 파출부인 제가 어떻게 어머니가 될 수 있습니까?”
“어머니! 오랜만에 불러보는 이름입니다. 제 어머니가 되어주십시오.”

 둘은 서로 부둥켜안고 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 며칠이 흐르고 양어머니는 아들에게 여자 친구가 없다는 사실을 알고 좋은 아가씨를 소개했습니다. 견우와 직녀처럼 두 사람은 서로 첫눈에 반했습니다. 그렇게 결혼을 준비하고 청첩장을 쓰는데 마음에 삭지 않는 분노가 있었어요. 바로 형 투하오. 형에게 이 성공을 보여주리라 생각하고 결혼식에 초대했습니다. 형이 결혼식에 왔습니다. 결혼식이 끝나고 동생은 마이크를 잡고 분한 마음을 표현했습니다.

“오늘 이 자리에 오신 모든 분에게 감사드립니다. 제가 오늘 이 자리에 서기까지 들려드리고 싶은 이야기가 한 가지 있습니다. 그 주인공은 바로 저 뒤에 있는, 저와 의형제를 맺은 투하오 형에 관한 이야기입니다. 저는 형을 위해 제가 사랑하던 여인까지 주었습니다. 그리고 어느 날 제가 실직을 해서 형을 찾아갔는데 문전박대를 당했습니다. 제가 반드시 성공해서 다시 만나겠다고 이를 악물었습니다. 그런데 하늘은 저를 버리지 않으시고 저에게 양부, 양모를 주셨습니다. 그리고 오늘 아내까지 맞이하게 되었습니다. 저는 형에게 이렇게 성공한 동생의 모습을 꼭 보여주고 싶었습니다.”

형이 가만히 듣고 있다가 말을 꺼냈습니다.

“예, 저도 오늘은 꼭 이야기하고 싶습니다. 저는 별삼을 동생으로 두고 있는 형 투하오입니다. 맞습니다. 제가 그런 무정한 형입니다. 그런데 오늘 얘기하지 않을 수 없는 것이 있습니다. 어느 날 동생이 결혼을 하겠다고 여자를 데려왔는데 아내감으로 마땅치 않았습니다. 동생이 그 여자와 결혼을 하면 불행해질 것이 한눈에 보였습니다. 그래서 동생이 그 여인을 멀리하도록 조취를 취한 것입니다. 그리고 동생이 회사로 일자리를 구하러 온 적이 있습니다. 나는 동생을 거절했어요. 왜냐하면 동생이 저의 수하에 있기를 바라지 않았기 때문입니다. 저는 의형제인 동생이 진짜 저의 동생이 되길 바랐습니다.
어느 날 어떻게 하면 동생을 도울 수 있을까 고민하다가 아버지에게 부탁을 드렸습니다. ‘아버지, 사랑하는 동생이 있는데 아버지가 좀 도와주십시오.’ ‘어떻게 하면 되겠냐?’‘동생이 다니는 길에 아버지가 그냥 죽은 듯이 누워 계세요. 그러면 동생이 아버지를 살릴 겁니다. 동생은 자존심이 강해서 돈을 그냥 주면 받지 않을 테니 아버지가 양아버지가 되어주세요. 그리고 재산의 반을 주세요.’ 동생을 도우려고 고민하다가 어머니에게도 부탁을 드렸습니다. ‘거지로 분장해서 동생에게 찾아가 주세요. 동생이 밥을 잘 챙겨 먹는지, 청소를 잘하는지, 도와주세요. 동생은 마음이 착해서 어머니를 거절하지 않을 겁니다.” 그렇게 파출부로 일하신 분이 저의 어머니십니다. 그리고 별삼이 결혼해야 할 적령기가 지나서, 아내가 될 여인을 소개해주고 싶었습니다. 사실 오늘의 여주인공인 신부가 바로 제 여동생입니다.”

내가 보는 것이 완전한 실상이라고 말할 수 있나요? 사람들은 삶 속에서 허상과 실상을 분별하지 못할 때가 있습니다. 형의 이야기를 통해 허상과 실상이 밝혀지는 순간, 동생이 알고 있는 형의 모습이 실상이었나요? 동생은 형에 대해, 자신을 내쫓고 사랑하는 아내까지 빼앗는 무정한 사람이라고 여겼습니다. 그런데 사실은 별삼이 얻은 재산, 별장, 양아버지, 양어머니, 아내는 형이 모두 세밀하게 준비한 것입니다. 동생이 알고 있던 실상과는 전혀 달랐습니다.
우리 주변을 돌아보면 부모님, 친구 등의 관계에서 내 편에서만 생각한 적은 없나요? 그래서 오해하고 편견으로 점철되어 둘도 없는 사이가 하루아침에 나빠지는 경우도 있습니다. 그런 경우가 있었다면 한번 상대와 이야기를 나눠보세요. 아마도 여러분이 알지 못하는 상대의 마음을 발견하게 될 것입니다.

 There is a very famous story about the brothers named Tuhau and Byulsam in China. The names Tuhau and Byulsam meant “a parvenu and a timid person” respectively. The definition of parvenu has a different interpretation to that of Korea; it contains a good meaning where although the person becomes a rich man overnight, they have a vigorous and generous character. Tuhau and Byulsam truly liked and cared for each other. But then, one day, the older brother spoke to his little brother.

“Hey, Byulsam. What can you do for this older brother? What sacrifice can you make?”
The little brother thought for a moment at his older brother’s question.
“I can give up my life for you, brother.”
The older brother was touched at his words.
“Byulsam, I will not ask you to go far as to give up your life; I have just one request. Can you give me the woman that you love now?”

Since, Byulsam had told him that he could even give up his life, he took a deep breath and said,

“Brother Tuhau. I will send that woman to you.”

The little brother sent the woman he loved to his older brother. Then, after some time passed, Byulsam lost his job and he thought of his older brother. ‘My older brother will never forget the sacrifice I made. So, he will not refuse or dislike giving me a job!’

Byulsam went to his older brother Tuhau’s company. But, for some unknown reason,

he did not even show his face once and instead sent his secretary to kick Byulsam out.

“Please, leave!”
“Wait, do you not know who I am? My older brother is the CEO of this company. How can the older brother not even show his face when his little brother has come to see him? Is my older brother really here?”
“Yes, he is present. However, he has said that he will not meet with you. So, leave immediately.”

The secretary coldly flung him out of the building. The little brother was at a complete loss for words. He gnashed his teeth as he thought, ‘We’ll see about this.’

A few days later, the little brother came across a dying old man lying down on the road. Other people passed by without giving a glance; but, Byulsam went up to the old man to check whether he was breathing. He was completely still as if he was a dead person.

 He went to the hospital with the old man and met the doctor. Byulsam was praised by the doctor for saving the old man. The old man was actually a rich person, and made Byulsam his foster son on the spot and gave him half his fortune. Byulsam had become a parvenu. The first thing that Byulsam did was to move to a villa next door to Tuhau’s house. Then, a few days later, someone knocked on his door. “Knock, knock.” When he opened the door, there was an old woman with a stooped back saying, “Alms for the poor. Please, give me some alms.” Byulsam handed her some money and told her to,“Buy something delicious with the money.”

But, Byulsam called her again, after seeing his deceased mother in the image of the old woman turning away.

“Um, excuse me. But, can you cook well?”
“I am a very good cook.”
“Then, that’s good enough. I live alone in this big house and it would be great if you could cook the food.”
“Thank you for that offer.”

The old woman cleaned and cooked diligently for him. The two people became very close like mother and son. Byulsam thought, ‘I want to live with her as my foster mother.’

“I would like to make you my foster mother.”
“How can a housekeeper like me become a mother?”
“Mother! It is a name I have not uttered in a long while. Please become my mother.”

 They both wept as they embraced each other. A few days later, the foster mother introduced his son to a good lady after knowing that he had no girlfriend of his own. Just as the meeting of the two love-stars, the Altair and the Vega, the two people fell in love at first sight. Thus, the wedding was set and invitations were being written; however, there was a rage inside him that wouldn’t go out. It was directed at his older brother, Tuhau. He invited his older brother to show this triumph. Therefore, the older brother came to the wedding. After the wedding was over, the little brother took the mike and 77began to express his rage.

 “Thank you all for coming to this place. There is a story that I wanted to tell everyone until I got here. This is a story about my blood brother, Tuhau, who is sitting directly back there. I gave up the woman I love for my brother. But, one day, when I went to his company after losing my job, I was refused admittance. I gnashed my teeth in resolution that after I became successful, I would meet my brother again. However, the Heavens did not forsake me and gifted me with a foster father and mother. Also, I was able to meet my wife. I wanted to show my older brother his little brother’s successful life.” The older brother listened in silence and then began to speak.

 “Yes, I also have something that I must say today. I am Tuhau, and my little brother is Byulsam. He is right. I am a cold-hearted brother. But, there is something that must be said today. One day, my little brother brought over the woman he wished to marry but she was not fit for a wife. I could see easily that if my little brother married that woman, he would be miserable. So I took measures to make sure the woman would be far away from him. And once, my little brother came to my company to say that he was looking for a job. I turned my brother down. The reason was because I didn’t want him to work as one of my subordinates. I wanted my sworn brother to be my real brother. One day, I was pondering about what I could do to help my brother and so I asked a favor to my father. ‘Father, I have a little brother whom I love; please help me.’ ‘What can I do?’ ‘Father, just lie down on the road where my little brother will pass by. Then, he will save you. Since, he is a very proud person, he will not accept money that is just given to him so become his foster father. And then give half of your wealth to him.’ As I continued to ponder, I also asked my mother. ‘Please, disguise yourself as a beggar and go to my little brother. Help him to see whether he is cleaning up and eating well. My little brother has a kind heart, so he will not turn you away.’ So, the housekeeper was my mother. Furthermore, I wanted to introduce a woman to my little brother, since he was well past the age of getting married. Therefore, the main bride of today’s wedding is my sister.”

 Can you say that what you see is the complete truth? There are times when people are not able to differentiate between illusion and reality. When the illusion and the reality were revealed through the older brother’s story, was the image of the older brother that the little brother knew of, the truth? The little brother regarded the older brother as a cruel person who kicked him out and stole the woman he loved. But, in fact, all of the fortune, the villa, his foster father and mother, his wife, etc. were prepared in subtlety by the older brother. It was completely different from the truth that the little brother knew of. Wasn’t there a time, when you only thought about something through your point of view towards the people around you like your family, and friends? Therefore, there are cases where misunderstandings develop into prejudice and a lifetime relationship turns sour overnight. If such a case happened to you, then, have a talk with that person. Most likely, you will discover something in their hearts that you didn’t know of before.
