링컨스쿨 교사 양락 변하는 학생을 볼 때 가장 행복하다

양락 씨는 어떠한 집안에서 태어나, 학창시절에는 무엇에 관심이 많았는지요. 그리고 부모님은 어떤 분이셨는지요?

저는 엄격한 중국인 가정에서 자랐습니다. 할아버지는 50세가 되기 전 박사학위 3개를 받으신 유학자이셨습니다. 할아버지는 제가 어릴 때부터 학습에 뛰어나야 훌륭한 사람이 될 수 있다고 끊임없이 가르치셨습니다. 아버지도 유교정신을 성공적으로 이어받아 경제학자가 되셨습니다. 수의사인 어머니는 아프거나 다친 동물들을 돌보는 데 헌신하셨습니다. 그런데 저는 캐나다에서 나고 자라서, 학창시절 저의 자아정체성을 찾으려고 고민했습니다. 동양인 후손이면서 서양에 산다는 이유로 저의 근본 문화의 뿌리를 지켜야 한다고 배웠고, 다섯 살 때부터 여러 가지 언어를 동시에 배우기 시작했습니다. 서양에서 한계를 넘어 제대로 된 삶을 살려면 반드시 엘리트가 되어야 한다고 들었습니다. 그래서 저는 수십 년 동안 공자의 가르침과 고전 문학들을 외웠습니다.

어머니는 제게 하루에 350단어 정도로 구성된 글을 외국어로 암기하도록 시키셨는데 그 어린시절이 가장 제 기억에 남습니다. 매일 자기 전에 책 한 권을 읽고 그 내용을 어머니 앞에서 설명해야 했습니다. 하루에 주어진 과제를 다 마치지 못하면 아무것도 먹을 수 없었습니다. 우리 모두가 알듯이 사람은 본능적으로 편하게 살고 싶어 합니다. 하지만 부모님께서는 저를 어린 시절부터 강하게 키우셨기 때문에 제게 여러 문제를 이겨낼 수 있는 강한 마음이 형성될 수 있었습니다.

6개 언어를 구사하신다니 많은 사람들에게는 꿈같은 이야기입니다. 어떤 언어를 구사할 줄 알며, 언어를 쉽게 배우는 나름의 노하우나 비법이 있습니까?

저는 영어, 광둥어, 만다린어, 말레이어를 자유롭게 구사할 줄 알고, 불어와 한국어를 편하게 읽을 수 있는 수준입니다. 가장 좋은 교사는 흥미입니다. 학생이 어떤 분야에 관심이 있으면 그것이 열심히 공부하도록 이끌어주는 힘이 됩니다. 그래서 저는 학생들을 가르칠 때, 수업의 수준을 향상시키기 위해 머리에 문법지식을 구겨 넣는 것보다는 영어에 대한 흥미를 유발시키도록 노력합니다. 한국의 영어교육이 문법중심, 시험 중심인 것이 너무 안타깝습니다. 이런 환경이 처음부터 영어에 대한 흥미를 잃도록 만들 수도 있고 이런 교실 환경에서 언어를 습득하는 것은 불가능합니다.

제가 한국어를 공부할 때는 문법부터 배우기보다는 한국 문화와 역사를 소개하는 한국어 책을 먼저 샀고, 그 후에 큰 소리로 읽으며 발음 연습을 했고 전체 내용을 암기했습니다. 집안에 틀어놓은 한국어를 계속 들으면서 한국어에 대한 감각도 익힐 수 있었습니다. 한국어 드라마를 한국어 자막과 함께 보고 한국어 노래를 들으면서 가능한 한 많이 제 생활을 한국어에 노출시키고 있습니다. 언어를 사랑하고 삶의 일부로 만들면 언어를 배우는 데 성공하리라 믿습니다.

유년기 시절부터 친했던 친구가 하버드대에 입학했습니다. 그런데 그 친구의 갑작스런 죽음으로 저는 몇 년 동안 우울증에 빠졌습니다. 장례식 때 죽은 친구의 어머니께서 크게 상실한 모습으로 아들의 관 앞에 계셨는데, 그 모습을 바라보는 것이 정말 고통스러웠습니다. 지금도 아들의 관에 기대어 주저앉아 절망에 싸여 울부짖으시는 친구의 어머니를 또렷하게 기억합니다. 그때 전 인생은 불확실하고 죽음은 확실하다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 제 자신에게 묻기 시작했습니다. ‘죽음 후에 우리는 어디로 가는가?’ 이 사건은 저를 물질주의적인 세속주의자에서 우주의 진리를 찾는 사람으로 바꾸어 주었습니다.

UN에서는 어떤 대우를 받으며 일했고, 왜 그만두고 다시 링컨학교로 돌아왔는지요?

링컨학교에서 잠시 봉사한 후에 저는 UN에 들어갔습니다. UN에서 일하는 것은 여러 가지 분야로 나뉘는데, 각각 특별한 학력과 전문지식을 요구합니다. 저는 스위스의 UN 총회 및 컨퍼런스 관리 부서에서 서류를 교정하는 일로 인턴십에 지원하여 UN 공식 문서와 출판물들을 특정 언어로 번역하는 일을 했습니다.
인턴십이 끝난 뒤에는 집에 살거나 일 년에 한 번 자유여행을 할 기회가 주어지는, 대우가 좋은 직장이었습니다. 하지만 매일 반복되는 이 일이 지루했습니다. 안정적인 월급을 받음에도 불구하고 혁신적이지 않았으며, 창의성과 일의 효율성을 높일 수 없었고, 고무적이지 않았습니다. 반면 교육을 통해 한 사람의 삶을 바꿀 수 있다면 제 인생이 얼마나 즐겁고 가치 있을까요. 제가 링컨학교에 다시 돌아온 것은 저의 자유분방한 성격 때문이었다고 생각합니다. 친척들과 친구들에게 이 점을 이해시키기란 어렵죠. 하지만 저는 제 선택에 대해 후회하지 않습니다.

저는 주로 영어를 가르치는데요, 영어회화, 연설, 프리젠테이션, 작문, 토플 테스트 준비, 문법 등을 가르칩니다. 방과 후 활동으로 다른 언어도 가르칩니다. 한국에서 영어를 가르치는 것은 교육이라는 탈을 쓴 사업과 같습니다. 경제적으로 여유가 있는 가정에서는 자녀를 학원에 보내지만 그렇지 않은 가정의 학생들은 학교 밖에서 영어를 배우기가 힘듭니다. 그런데 링컨학교 학생들은 주로 여유롭지 못한 가정 출신이어서 출발부터 뒤처졌다고 봐야 하고, 대부분 많은 문제를 가지고 입학했습니다. 저는 학생들이 잃어버린 자신감을 다시 가지도록 지도하기 위해 그들의 개성을 느끼고 이해하려고 합니다. 그리고 학창시절에 자신의 재능에 따라 성과를 얻을 수 있도록 하고 있습니다. 수업시간에는 모든 학생이 전 세계 문제에 대해 자유롭게 토론하면서 자신의 의견을 말하고, 저는 질문을 제시하여 학생들이 비판적인 사고력과 창의성을 기를 수 있도록 지도하고 있습니다.

높은 연봉과 좋은 대우를 받는 일자리는 많지만 진정으로 자신의 일에 만족하며 보람을 느끼는 일자리는 많지 않은 것 같습니다. 현재 링컨학교에서 학생들을 가르치지만 좋은 대우를 해주는 회사에서도 일해 보았다고 들었습니다. 어떤 일을 할 때, 더 큰 만족과 보람을 느꼈습니까?

제가 링컨학교 교사로 일하기 전, 비행기 엔지니어와 동시통역사로 일한 적이 있습니다. 그러나 교사로 일할 때만큼 만족을 얻진 못했습니다. 교사는 한 나라의 미래를 만들어갈 학생들에게 영향을 줄 수 있는 위대한 힘을 소유하고 있습니다. 그래서 교사가 가장 좋은 직업이며 제가 할 수 있는 가장 중요하고 영향력 있는 직업 중 하나라고 생각합니다. 저는 학생들이 변하는 것을 볼 때나 어둠 속에 있던 학생들이 빛을 바라보도록 도와줄 때 형용할 수 없이 기쁩니다.

스탠퍼드나 하버드에 비하면 링컨스쿨은 아주 작은 학교에 불과합니다. 학생 수, 시설이나 규모 면에서도 비교가 안 됩니다. 양락 씨가 생각하는 ‘세계 최고의 학교’란 어떤 학교입니까?

제가 생각할 때 미국 교육은 방향성을 잃고 있으며, 교육 과정에 있는 모든 것이 급락하고 있습니다. 저는 학생들에게 욕망을 절제시키고, 자기중심적인 사고의 씨앗을 제거해버리는 훈련을 시켜주는 곳이 최고의 시스템을 갖춘 학교라고 생각합니다.
그렇지 않으면 학생들을 망쳐버리기 때문이죠. 좋은 교육 시스템이란 시험 중심의 시스템이 아니라 학생들이 타인과 지역사회를 위하는 마음을 가질 수 있도록 가르치는 것입니다. 이를 통해 학생들은 자신의 삶과 미래의 목표에 있어서 긍정적인 시각을 갖게 될 것입니다.

Born in a renowned family, having one of the best academic abilities, and having a job with great treatment! I guess these are the life that many people want. However, Leon Lorke equipped with all these conditions and who used to work at the UN so-called the dream job, chose a life to be a teacher at the Lincoln School, a little alternative school. Because he believes that a job that leads students who are the future leaders to a right direction is the greatest work.

What kind of family were you born in and what were you interested in a lot when you were a student? Also, please tell us about your parents.

I was raised up in a strict Chinese descendant’s family. My grandfather was a scholar of Confucianism, who had gotten three PhDs before turning to age 50. Under the influence of background of Confucianism,
he has been repetitively monishing me through his life that one can become a great man only by excelling in learning ever since I was very young. My father has inherited Confucius roots quite successfully and ended up as a scholar in the field of economy. Mother has never stopped using her hand to treat sick or injured animals as a qualified veterinarian through her life. On the other hand, I have almost spent whole life living in Canada, the land of my birth, who had struggled with one issue.self-identity. As an Asian descendant living in the Western world, I have been required to keep the root of original culture and start learning several languages at the same time when I was only five. I have been told that if I want to break the ceiling glass and live a decent life in Western world afterwards, being an elitist is a must. It has been a routine by memorizing Confucius’ teachings and other ancient books for decades.

My most vivid childhood memories were of my mother screaming at me, asking me to memorize one article in other languages with about 350 words long a day. Besides, it has been the same every single day by reading a book and repeating the content from her before hitting the sack. Also, I was not allowed to eat if I fail to finish the work of the day. As we all know, people have predilection to live a comfortable way base on its nature. Since parents gave me a hard time during childhood, it was one of the important reasons which successfully helped me build a strong mind to confront difficulties of all kinds as a whole.

It is such a dreamlike story to many people that you can speak six different languages. What languages can you speak and is there any tip to learn languages easily?
English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Malay, and also I feel quite comfortable by reading French and Korean. In my opinion, “Interest is the best teacher.” It is a power to promote us to study hard in certain area where they are interested in. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of English teaching for my students, I must strive to stimulate students’ interest in learning English rather than cramming grammar into their heads. I’m sad to say that English lessons in South Korea were too grammar-focused and test-oriented. That might possibly kill their interests from the very beginning. It is impossible to grasp a language in the classroom like that.
In my case, I didn’t start from studying grammar when I started approaching Korean. I just bought a book in Korean which introduces its culture and history. And then, I followed the sound of voice actor, reading loudly and memorizing the whole content. To hear the language consistently spoken in my house, it is a good way to help me create the sense of Korean. Watching Korean-language drama with Korean subtitle and listening to Korean-language music, I exposed myself to as much Korean as I can. I’m sure you will succeed in learning a foreign language if you love it and make it become a part of your life.

What kind of incident was your close friend’s death in your life and how did it affect you?

He was my best friends of all time ever since our childhood, who is a brilliant and intelligent Harvard student. And his sudden death led me to depression for a couple of years. In his funeral, I stood next to his mother before his coffin. Her loss was palpable, and painful to watch. I vividly remember her leaning down toward her son’s coffin and desperately crying out. At that moment, I came to realize life is uncertain and death is certain. I started asking myself a question from that time, where are we headed after we die? I think that was a transition point dragging me from material secularist to be a universe truth seeker.

Why did you decide to work as a teach at the Lincoln School?

I came across a Lincoln School teacher in a summer camp three years ago. One female student that I met when I studied at the Graduate School of Seoul National University invited me to be a volunteer for several weeks in Lincoln School. Simply because my long term vision was to build a school, I thought that would be an opportunity for me to directly encounter alternative education in Korea and hopefully get some inspiration from there.

How were you treated in the UN and why did you quit to come back to the Lincoln School?

After volunteering at the Lincoln School for a while, I entered the UN. UN careers are divided into different staff categories, each of which requires a specific educational background and area of expertise.
I applied for an internship in the Department of General Assembly and Conference Management as a document reviser in Switzerland. My obligation was to translate official UN documents and publications into certain languages.
House and free trip one time a year would be magnificently secured after finishing internship. However, I got very bored with works, which I need to do the same thing every day. There was no innovation, creativity, or incentive for the job improvement despite the stable salary. However, if I change a person’s life through education, how joyful and valuable my life would be. I think it was my unsettled character to bring me back. It’s hard to be understood by my relatives and friends, but I will never regret for making this choice.

What subject do you teach in the Lincoln School? We’ve heard that you also teach discussion and writing that are necessary to leaders. We are curious how do you teach the students.

I am primarily teaching English including oral and public speaking, presentation, real life useful expressions, writing, TOEFL test and grammar. Also, I teach other languages in the extracurricular as well. It seems like teaching English in South Korea is a business, but masquerading as education. In Korea, if the family is rich enough, they’ll send their kid to a Hagwon, but if the family isn’t too well-off, then the child may not get any kind of English education outside public school. The majority of students in Lincoln School aren’t very well off. They have lost the starting line ever since they were born. Furthermore, they brought with various problems when they were sent to Lincoln School. What I have to do is to rebuild the confidence they have lost in their life, by feeling and grasping their individual personality. I have been trying to direct them to get their achievements during school life according to their personal talents. Besides, through class discussion, students are allowed to freely open their mouth to express their own opinions regarding certain worldwide issues. Teacher plays a role of guide by throwing questions in order to let them think, so that the critical thinking and creativity could be largely formed.

There are many jobs that give you much money and treat you well. However, there are not many jobs that make you satisfied truly and feel worthy. Now you are teaching students in the Lincoln School, but you’ve worked in a company that gave you better salary. When did you feel the greater satisfaction and worthy?

I had been employed as an airplane engineer and simultaneous interpreter before getting into Lincoln School. I have never felt a sense of satisfaction as much as being a teacher. In my understanding, a teacher possesses a great power to influence students, who can clearly shape a nation’s future. I can’t help to tell you teaching is truly a top career, one of the most important and influential jobs I can have. When I saw a student changed, when I carried student through the darkness and have him see the lights ahead, the joy inside my heart was beyond description.

It is extremely important to find what we really love.... It’s pretty hard to imagine someone can do great work and bear good fruits without passion and love. Life is short, time is critical, and passion is vital. I don’t have much time to kill and deal with some stuff I don’t actually enjoy. That was the driving force to quit my jobs in airline and UN as a whole. Money is not everything, but if you get enough passion and enthusiasm towards your career, it will also come up to you.

The Lincoln School is very a small school, compared to Stanford University and Harvard University. We cannot even compare those in terms of the number of smart students, facilities and size of the schools. What is the ‘world best school’ in your opinion?

In my view, American education is losing direction and everything in the process is of free-fall. I believe that the best school system is a place to discipline the students’ desires and setting limits to wipe away the seeds of being self-centered or spoiled. A good educational system is not test driven, but being able to instruct student to serve others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. It will let students have a positive view on their lives and future goals.
